Did You Know?

National Sewing Month was established in 1982 when President Ronald Regan proclaimed September as a time to honor the art of sewing. It is a reminder of the self-reliance the sewing fosters, as well as it's historical past dating back to 25,00 BC when sewing was used to create clothing and shelter.

I have found in the past that many sewers were taught by grandmothers and the skill sometimes skips a generation. It is a necessary skill whether it's sewing a button on or mending before throwing away garments or household linens.

I ask a young man for a straight pin last week and he answered with, what is a straight pin? I suggest that every sewer share the basic skills of sewing with someone in the month of September to celebrate National Sewing Month.

Happy Sewing!
