Stanley The Orange Tabby Cat

Welcome to Maxwell Stanley

Stanley the Orange TabbyLast January, Stanley's loving owner passed away, and he suddenly needed a new home. I'm not really a cat person, but Stanley has turned out to be one of the best cats I could have hoped for.

For the first few days, he hid under the bed. I would lie on the floor and gently talk to him, reassuring him that everything was going to be okay. Little by little, he began to trust his new surroundings. Soon he was sleeping at the foot of the bed, and it was clear he was starting to feel at home.

After about a month, we finally let him outside to enjoy the yard. It turned out to be a cat's paradise—stacks of wood filled with friendly lizards, bushes perfect for hiding beneath, and plenty of places to explore. He even wandered into my art studio to inspect what I was working on.

When spring arrived, Stanley truly came into his own. He quickly discovered the neighborhood cats, and several of them began stopping by the yard to visit. His favorite seems to be a big gray cat. The two of them carry on long conversations with soft meows and cheerful little chirps. Of course, not every visitor is welcome. There are a few neighborhood cats that Stanley has chased away, proudly protecting what he now considers his own territory.

One of Stanley's favorite morning activities is "helping" me water the garden. He faithfully follows along as I water the tomatoes, peppers, and herbs, making it part of his daily routine. I think he has earned a patch of catnip, so I'll be planting some for him this fall.

Stanley's other favorite visitors are my brother-in-law, Mike, and his Border Collie, Penny. The first time Penny came by after her morning walk, Stanley greeted her with a hiss. Today, it's a completely different story. Stanley waits on the deck for Penny to arrive, ready for another morning spent together with coffee, cookies, and good company.

One morning, while we were enjoying our usual visit, Mike mentioned that he hadn't been able to find Christmas cards he liked the previous year. That conversation sparked an idea. I decided to start painting Christmas scenes featuring Mike and Penny that he could use for holiday cards. It didn't take long before Stanley claimed his own starring role in a Christmas painting as well.

Painting Stanley has become so much fun that I started imagining him in a series of twelve different scenes—one for each month of an Orange Tabby Cat calendar. When I shared some of the paintings with my son, he smiled and said, "I can see a children's book in our future."

It's a wonderful idea. I'm not a writer, so who knows where it will lead. But Stanley has already surprised me once. I never imagined that taking in one shy orange tabby would inspire a collection of paintings—or perhaps the beginning of a story worth sharing.

Only time will tell what adventures lie ahead for Stanley, the Orange Tabby.
